Hundreds of farmers have committed suicide in the Vidharbha region of India because of the burden of increasing debt owing repeated crop failure over the years.
It is interesting to note that most of these unfortunate farmers are cotton farmers growing the Monsanto BT cotton variety.This cotton variety though gives good yield,it considerably increases the cost of farming because the farmers have to buy fresh seeds every year at high prices.They have to borrow money from private money lenders and banks for the seeds and the crops are failing because of poor monsoon.
The government of India has enforced several measures to check the suicides but it continues unabated.
